SYNOPSIS

Orbit 1 is a PAV (Personal Air Vehicle) company that aims to revolutionize the way people commute in the 21st century. The company's mission is to provide safe, efficient, and eco-friendly transportation options that help reduce congestion on the roads. Orbit 1's focus on sustainability and innovation is reflected in its fleet of sleek and futuristic vehicles that offer personalized travel services to commuters in urban and suburban areas.

As a UX designer for Orbit 1's PAV company, my goal is to design the flight deck control system that provides a seamless and enjoyable travel experience for passengers. The control system would need to be user friendly and intuitive, with a focus on providing relevant and personalized information to passengers. In addition, the system would also incorporate entertainment features, such as music and movies, to enhance the passenger experience and make the flight more enjoyable.

PROJECT OUTLINE

User Persona | Secondary Research | Ideation | Prototyping | Visual Design

Research

  • By conducting secondary research, competitive analysis, and talking to experts I was able to identify various challenges in order to successfully design an efficient vehicle infotainment system. The key takeaways to from the research led me to address the following considerations:

Complexity

Operating a PAV can be complex, untrained users can find the controls and functions to be challenging and intimidating.

Safety

Safety is a essential concern when operating a PAV. Real time information such as GPS, warning, alerts and access to help provides comfort to a user.

Entertainment

Integrating entertainment options such as access to music and movies enables a more pleasurable traveling experience.

User Persona

Site map

  • I was able to identify the MVP of the interface, which are the pages, "travel (homepage)", entertainment (media) and service.
  • I created a sitemap using Miro to help me visualize the various pages of the interface and anticipate potential challenges. The sitemap allowed me to see the structure and hierarchy of the pages, as well as identify the most important features and functions.

Moodboard

  • In designing the user interface, I drew inspiration from a range of sources, including heat maps, geography maps, and modern sci-fi typefaces.

IDEATION

Sketches

  • I started my ideation sketches by roughly sketching on a tablet. I created various mockups which I then funneled into eight directions for each page. I highlighted concepts that I found interesting and able to communicate the information effectively.

Low Fidelity Wireframes

  • After letting my sketches marinate, I was able to dissect the concepts and compiled the stronger ideas into the low fidelity wireframes. This process helped me crystallize the direction I wanted to travel towards for each of the three pages. (Home, media and service)

Style Guide

    Final Design

    Home

    • On the homepage, I established a clear visual hierarchy by starting with the search bar at the top of the page. This is the primary point of navigation for users and will be the first thing they interact with when using the app.
    • In the bottom left column of the page, I included important maps that users can access when preparing for a trip. In addition to the "wind" map, users can also access maps that show temperature, precipitation, satellite data, and more. By providing access to these important maps, users can make more informed travel decisions and plan their trips more effectively.
    • Finally, the right column of the homepage displays past destinations and provides users with a quick way to navigate back to a previous location. By making it easy for users to revisit places they've been before, the app encourages users to continue exploring and traveling.

    Media

    • The Media page provides the users with a clean and intuitive interface to interact with various streaming platforms. The circular layout of the portals is visually engaging and helps to highlight the most frequently used platforms.
    • The search bar in the top right corner provides users with an efficient way to access specific content, while the gear icon allows for easy customization of settings.
    • In the future, I would like to add an animation where the circles converge to the center of the page upon opening the software, further enhancing the user experience.

    Service

    • The Service page is the core of the interface, serving as a hub for all essential information related to the PAV's health and maintenance. It includes communication tools, emergency protocols, and other features to ensure smooth operations.
    • This page also features a camera feed, which allows users to view the PAV from different angles through its various bottom cameras. The intuitive design of the Service page ensures that users have quick and easy access to important information and tools to keep their PAV in top condition.
